How to Prevent Cockroaches at Home in Singapore – 15 Methods That Actually Work

Written by NEA and BCA-certified technicians at Termite Specialist Pte Ltd  |  13 years of field experience  |  Updated March 2026

The most important step most Singapore homeowners miss: cover your floor trap with a stopper when not in use. An open-floor trap is a direct entrance to the shared drain beneath your HDB or condo.

After that: seal the rubbish chute door gap, fix any pipe leak under the kitchen sink, and store food in sealed containers. These four actions stop the three main entry and survival routes cockroaches use in Singapore homes.

If cockroaches are already inside, prevention alone will not resolve the issue. You need treatment first, then prevention to stop them from coming back.

How to Prevent Cockroaches at Home in Singapore

Cleaning your kitchen and cockroaches still keep appearing? You are not doing anything wrong. In Singapore, cockroaches enter through the building itself: open floor traps, rubbish chute gaps, and the pipe voids connecting your unit to your neighbour’s. None of those gets fixed by wiping the counter.

This guide covers 15 prevention methods from our NEA and BCA-certified technicians, a room-by-room guide for HDB and condo homes, an honest breakdown of natural remedies (including the truth about pandan leaves), and a maintenance checklist you can follow without buying anything. If you need to confirm what species you are dealing with first, read our cockroach infestation Singapore guide before starting here.

Why Cockroaches Keep Coming Back Despite Cleaning

Cockroaches need three things to survive: food, moisture, and a safe place to nest. Remove any one of them, and your home becomes much harder for a colony to survive in.

NeedWhat Provides It in Your HomeHow to Remove It
FoodCrumbs on the floor, grease behind the hob, open bins, pet food bowls, cardboard packagingSealed containers, daily bin emptying, and cleaning under appliances regularly
MoistureLeaking pipes, wet sponges, standing water in drains, damp bathroomsFix leaks fast, dry surfaces, cover floor drains, and improve ventilation
Nesting spotsCabinet hinges, pipe voids, wall cracks, cardboard and newspaper pilesSilicone sealing, declutter, gel bait in cabinet hinges”

Singapore makes this harder than most countries. The heat and humidity (25 to 35 degrees, 70 to 90% humidity year-round) mean cockroaches breed every month without stopping. A German cockroach colony that takes 6 months to establish in Europe takes 8 to 10 weeks in a Singapore kitchen.

On top of that, HDB flats and condos share drainage systems, rubbish chute shafts, and wall pipe voids. A neighbour’s infestation can reach your kitchen through the shared wall without anyone knowing. This is why even a very clean Singapore home can get cockroaches.

15 Cockroach Prevention Methods

Start from the top. The first few steps do more than all the rest combined.

1. Cover your floor trap

Put a stopper or mesh cover on every floor trap in the kitchen and bathroom when water is not running. An open floor trap connects directly to the shared drain below the building, and American cockroaches (the big reddish-brown ones) use it as their main entry point.

Use a flip-top drain stopper that seals when water is not flowing. Available at any hardware store for around S$3 to S$8 per trap. This is the single cheapest, fastest prevention action in Singapore.

2. Seal the rubbish chute door gap

The gap around your rubbish chute door frame connects directly to the chute shaft, which runs to the bin centre and is full of cockroaches. Apply silicone sealant along the full frame perimeter: top, sides, and bottom.

Recheck every 6 months. Silicone shrinks in Singapore’s heat, and new gaps open up.

3. Fix the leaking pipes under the kitchen sink immediately

A dripping P-trap joint under the sink is the most common reason German cockroaches nest in Singapore kitchens. The combination of constant moisture, warmth, and food nearby is exactly what they look for.

Fix leaks the same day you notice them. After fixing, dry the cabinet floor completely and leave the door open overnight.

4. Store all dry food in sealed containers

Singapore’s humidity makes open food packets spoil faster and smell stronger. Rice, cereal, biscuits, spices, and pet food in open packaging give a colony a permanent food source.

Transfer everything into airtight containers. Remove pet food bowls before you go to bed. Cockroaches are most active between midnight and 3 am.

5. Clean behind the fridge and under the hob every 3 months

Grease and food debris collect in these two spots faster than anywhere else in the kitchen. Pull the fridge fully out, clean the floor and back wall with degreaser. Remove the hob grates and clean the tray underneath.

These are the two most common nesting spots in Singapore kitchens, along with the gap inside cabinet door hinges.

6. Wash dishes before midnight or rinse and cover them

Any food residue in the sink between midnight and 3 am is being foraged. You do not need to be strict about this during the day, but clear the sink before bed.

7. Seal the skirting board gaps along kitchen walls

The gap between the skirting board and the wall runs the full perimeter of the kitchen floor and is a main travel route for German cockroaches. Apply a thin bead of silicone along every kitchen skirting board, especially in the corners and behind cabinet plinths.

8. Inspect second-hand items before bringing them inside

Second-hand furniture, appliances, and cardboard boxes are the most common ways cockroaches enter a home with no existing infestation. Egg cases glued inside cabinet hinges or behind drawer runners hatch inside your home weeks later.

Before bringing any second-hand item in, check every hinge, drawer runner, and enclosed cavity with a torch. Small brown capsules (about 8 to 10mm long) are cockroach egg cases.

9. Empty the kitchen bin daily and use a lid

An open kitchen bin in Singapore’s heat generates odours within hours that attract cockroaches from other rooms. Use a sealed press-top or pedal bin and empty it every evening.

10. Remove cardboard boxes and newspaper piles

Cockroaches nest inside the corrugated layers of cardboard. Boxes stored in kitchen cabinets, service yards, and storerooms are nesting sites. Use sealed plastic bins for storage instead, and break down cardboard packaging the same day it arrives.

11. Pour boiling water into floor drains weekly

A weekly pour of boiling water into the kitchen and bathroom drains removes organic buildup that cockroaches feed on inside the drain system. It takes 30 seconds and costs nothing.

12. Seal gaps around pipes and power points

Every pipe entering your kitchen or bathroom wall has a hole around it. Unless that hole is fully sealed, it connects to the pipe void inside the wall, which connects to neighbouring units. Check every pipe entry under sinks and in bathrooms. Seal any visible gap with silicone. Loose electrical outlet backboxes create the same problem.

13. Ventilate bathrooms and the service yard properly

Bathrooms and service yards that stay damp attract cockroaches. Run the exhaust fan for at least 20 minutes after showering. If there is no fan, leave the bathroom door open after use. Do not leave wet laundry sitting in basins.

14. Apply gel bait inside cabinet hinges as a preventive measure

A small dot of professional-grade gel bait inside each cabinet hinge acts as an ongoing barrier. It catches the first few cockroaches that enter from a neighbouring unit through the shared pipe void, before a colony has time to establish.

Apply a 2mm dot inside each hinge and refresh every 3 to 4 months. This is the same approach used in post-treatment prevention by our technicians.

15. Do a prevention check every October before monsoon season

The November to January monsoon floods outdoor drains and pushes American cockroaches into residential buildings in large numbers. A quick check in October catches gaps that opened during the year before the wet season starts. The October checklist is in the HDB section below. For treatment if an infestation is already present, see our cockroach pest control service.

Room-by-Room Prevention for Singapore Homes

Different cockroach species prefer different rooms. Knowing which room to focus on tells you which species and which actions matter most.

Kitchen

German cockroaches target the kitchen first because it has everything they need in one place. The three main nesting spots are inside cabinet door hinges, under the sink, and behind the fridge. Prevention focuses on sealing those spots and removing food and moisture.

  • Entry: Seal floor trap, skirting board gaps, pipe entry points under the sink
  • Nesting spots: Clean inside all cabinet hinges quarterly, remove cardboard from lower cabinets
  • Food: Sealed containers, no overnight dishes, clean under the hob regularly
  • Moisture: Fix leaks the same day, dry the under-sink cabinet floor, and do not store wet sponges in closed spaces

Bathroom

The bathroom is the main entry point for American cockroaches. They come up through the floor trap from the shared drain below. German cockroaches can also nest behind loose tiles and under bathroom cabinets.

  • Most important: Cover the floor trap whenever the shower is not running
  • Seal: Gaps between the toilet base and the floor, around pipe entry points under the basin
  • Dry: Run exhaust fan for 20 minutes after showering, no wet towels on the floor
  • Check: Behind the basin cabinet quarterly for moisture and egg cases

Bedroom

Most people do not connect bedrooms with cockroaches, which is exactly why brown-banded cockroaches go undetected there for months. This species avoids kitchens and prefers warm, dry spots: inside electronics, behind picture frames, inside furniture joints.

If cockroaches appear in your bedroom and kitchen, and treatment has not worked, brown-banded cockroaches are likely the cause. Check our cockroach infestation guide for species identification.

  • Prevention: Inspect second-hand furniture before bringing it in; no cardboard boxes under the bed
  • Reduce nesting spots: Declutter behind and under furniture, seal gaps behind built-in wardrobes
  • If found: Standard kitchen treatment will not work. The full home needs to be treated.

Service Yard and Drains

The service yard is where outdoor drains connect to indoor pipes. The wet kitchen drain, washing machine drain, and service yard floor trap all lead back to the shared drain system below the building.

  • Cover the service yard floor trap whenever not in use
  • Add a door sweep to the service yard door. The gap under most HDB service yard doors is large enough for a full-grown American cockroach
  • Do not store boxes, bags, or old appliances in the service yard
  • Clean the service yard drain monthly to remove organic buildup

Natural Prevention Methods: What Works and What Does Not

There is a lot of misinformation about natural cockroach prevention in Singapore, including some things that are widely recommended but do not work. Here is an honest assessment of each.

MethodEffectivenessSafe for Kids/PetsSingapore Notes
Boric acidMediumCautionApply as barely visible dust only inside sealed cavities. Clumps in humidity and lose effectiveness within weeks.
Diatomaceous earthLowYes (food-grade)Singapore humidity makes this much less effective. Only useful in genuinely dry enclosed spaces.
Peppermint or eucalyptus oilVery lowCaution with petsSingapore’s humidity makes this much less effective. Only useful in genuinely dry enclosed spaces.
Pandan leavesVery lowYesFresh leaves may cause short-term avoidance. Dried leaves become nesting material. Not reliable.
Bay leavesNegligibleYesNo evidence of effectiveness in real conditions.

What smell do cockroaches avoid?

Cockroaches avoid peppermint, eucalyptus, and cedarwood. But these cause avoidance only. They do not kill cockroaches, stop new ones from entering through your floor trap, or eliminate a colony. The most effective way to make your home less attractive is to remove the food smells and moisture that draw cockroaches in.

Your Prevention Checklist

Prevention is a routine, not a one-time task. These checklists are grouped by time so you can fit them into your existing habits.

Daily  (5 minutes)

Wash dishes or rinse and store them before midnight
Empty the kitchen bin or make sure the lid is fully closed
Wipe down the hob and kitchen counter after cooking
Remove pet food bowls before bed
Check that floor traps in the kitchen and bathroom are covered

Weekly  (15 minutes)

Pour boiling water into floor drains in kitchen, bathroom, and service yard
Check under the kitchen sink for any moisture or drips
Sweep or vacuum under the fridge and behind the hob
Remove any cardboard packaging or newspaper from the previous week
Wipe out the kitchen bin and check the lid seal

Monthly (30 minutes)

Check the silicone seals on floor traps and the rubbish chute door. Re-seal any gaps
Inspect all cabinet hinges for egg cases. Wipe clean if found
Check silicone seals on floor traps and the rubbish chute door. Re-seal any gaps
Clean the service yard drain
Pull the fridge fully out and clean the floor and back wall

What to Do After Professional Cockroach Treatment

Prevention works differently in the 48 hours after treatment. Getting this right determines how well the prevention phase holds.

  1. Do not clean the treated areas for 48 hours. Wiping the gel bait application points removes treatment before it reaches the colony. Do not mop inside cabinet areas, spray cleaning products near hinges, or wipe down the under-sink cabinet.
  2. Expect to see more cockroaches in the first 24 to 48 hours. Affected cockroaches leave their nesting areas in search of water and are more visible than usual. This is normal. It means treatment is working.
  3. Seal the entry points identified during the inspection. Floor traps, rubbish chute gaps, and skirting cracks should be sealed within the same week as treatment, before cockroaches from neighbouring units re-enter.
  4. Start the daily and weekly checklists above from the day after treatment.
  5. Book a follow-up check 3 weeks after treatment to confirm the colony has collapsed. If you are on our treatment plan, this is included. Our free re-treatment guarantee covers any cockroaches that return between visits.

When Prevention Is No Longer Enough

Signs that tell you there is already an active infestation

If you are seeing any of the signs below, prevention will not fix it. You need treatment first. Read our signs of cockroach infestation guide to confirm what you are dealing with.

What You Are SeeingWhat It Means
Cockroach seen during the dayColony is overcrowded. Prevention alone will not work.
Small black droppings inside cabinet cornersGerman cockroaches are nesting inside the cabinet. Sealing and cleaning will not remove them.
Brown capsules (egg cases) inside cabinet hingesActive colony. Eggs hatch in 28 days regardless of what you clean.
Brown capsules (egg cases) are inside cabinet hingesLarge colony producing pheromones and waste. A sign of an established infestation.
Cockroaches in the bedroom or living roomBrown-banded cockroach infestation. Needs full-home treatment, not just kitchen treatment.
The colony is overcrowded. Prevention alone will not work. The colony was never eliminated. Spray caused them to scatter to new areas in the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does pandan keep cockroaches away?
No. Fresh pandan may cause cockroaches to avoid an area briefly due to the scent, but there is no evidence it prevents or stops an infestation. Dried pandan leaves become a nesting spot, not a deterrent.
Q: What smell do cockroaches hate most?
Cockroaches avoid peppermint, eucalyptus, and cedarwood. These cause short-term avoidance only. They do not stop cockroaches from entering through floor traps or pipe voids, and they do not eliminate colonies.
Q: How do I stop cockroaches from coming up from the drain?
Cover the floor trap with a sealed stopper when water is not running. For the kitchen floor trap, use a flip-top stopper. Pour boiling water down the drain weekly. If large cockroaches keep appearing, also check and seal the rubbish chute door frame and the service yard floor trap.
Q: Does keeping the lights on prevent cockroaches?
Cockroaches avoid light and will stay hidden if lights are on, but the colony is still breeding inside your walls and cabinets. Lights on does not prevent or reduce an infestation.
Q: Is boric acid safe to use around children and pets?
Boric acid is toxic if swallowed. Only apply it as barely visible dust inside completely inaccessible spots like wall cracks and behind appliances. Never on open surfaces. If children or pets are in the home, professional gel bait applied by a certified technician is safer and more effective.
Q: How long does cockroach prevention take to work?
Sealing entry points works immediately once done. Removing food and moisture reduces survival conditions within a few days. But if a colony is already established inside your walls, prevention alone will not remove it. Treatment must come first. After professional treatment, prevention stops re-entry within 48 hours if entry points are sealed.
Q: Why do cockroaches appear in my home even though it is clean?
In Singapore, the most common reason is structural entry, not hygiene. An open floor trap, a gap around the rubbish chute door, or a shared pipe void lets cockroaches in from the building itself, regardless of how clean your unit is.
Q: Can cockroaches travel to upper floors in an HDB flat?
Yes. German cockroaches travel through shared pipe voids inside the party walls between units, including vertically between floors. American cockroaches travel up through the shared drain system and rubbish chute. Upper-floor residents are not protected by height.
Q: Should I use boric acid or diatomaceous earth?
Both perform poorly in Singapore’s humidity compared to dry climates. Boric acid clumps quickly in humid spaces. Diatomaceous earth needs dry conditions that are rare in Singapore kitchens and bathrooms. Both are better than consumer spray in targeted dry cavities, but neither matches
professional gel bait for an active infestation.
